NEW YORK, – September 3, 2023 – FOCOS Hospital for Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery is thrilled to announce its annual fundraising Gala, scheduled to take place at the prestigious Ziegfeld Theater on September 22, 2023. This year’s event, aptly named the “2023 FOCOS Gala: 25 Years of Impact,” holds special significance as it marks our first official in-person gala since the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

The purpose of the 2023 FOCOS Gala is to further our mission of providing access to high-quality, affordable, and specialized orthopedic care to individuals primarily in Ghana and the broader African region, who would otherwise lack such vital treatment. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we reflect upon a quarter-century of dedication to advancing state-of-the-art orthopedic care and education and helping countless children and adults worldwide “Stand Tall,” one patient at a time.

Highlights of the 2023 FOCOS Gala:

  • 25 Years of Impact: FOCOS Hospital has a remarkable legacy of 25 years of service. Since our inception, we have provided state-of-the-art orthopedic care and education, impacting over 85,000 patients and performing more than 8,000 complex surgeries on patients hailing from over 75 countries.
  • Global Collaboration: The success of FOCOS is not only a testament to our dedicated team but also to the 577 volunteer doctors and medical professionals from over 10 countries who have contributed their skills and expertise to our mission.
  • Reuniting In-Person: After a challenging period during the pandemic, we are excited to bring our supporters, donors, and well-wishers back together for a memorable evening celebrating our achievements and renewing our commitment to helping those in need.

“Over 80,000 patients seen and about 8,000 surgeries—what FOCOS has done over the last 25 years is nothing short of remarkable. The efforts from our doctors from around the world and the vision from my father to want to help children stand, walk, and even dance, exhibit the depth of humanity that our patients continue to benefit from,” said Kwadwo Boachie-Adjei, Board Chair and son of Dr. Boachie-Adjei. “FOCOS does more than impact, the organization and hospital are life-saving solutions for those that come to us for help.”

In 2012, FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital opened its doors, establishing a world-class hospital facility dedicated to orthopedic care for patients from across the globe. This state-of-the-art hospital facility has been instrumental in expanding our capacity to provide exceptional care and services to a wider range of patients in need.

The 2023 FOCOS Gala promises to be a night filled with inspiration, entertainment, and the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of individuals who depend on us. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our supporters and sponsors who have made our work possible throughout the years.

Visit by 33 Spine Align

A 7-member team from the 33spine group based in the USA visited the hospital in December 2022. They sponsored the surgeries of 8 patients to the tune of 100,000 USD. During their one-week visit, they interacted with patients, assisted in clinical activities and surgical procedures.

Ryan Redmond, Agent Principal for the 33Spine group, had this to say about the mission trip…

“I’m leaving so inspired by the talented surgeons and staff that change the lives of children with some of the world’s most complex spine deformities. I am truly honored and humbled by the patients and families that allowed us to be a part of their journey and forever grateful to be a part of this outreach mission”

Eunice – 8 Years

Eight-year old Eunice was eleven months old when her parents noticed a spinal deformity. Her symptoms included shortness of breath and not being able to sit properly. In 2019, upon recommendation, Eunice and her parents visited FOCOS Hospital. After assessment, she received a bill that her family could not afford. However, Eunice received the needed sponsorship from funds raised during the Virtual Gala 2021 and had a successful surgery in January 2020.

After visiting FOCOS again for a review in 2022, Eunice needed to have a revision to the cranial rods in her back. She was admitted in February 2022 and had a successful surgery the following day. Her parents expressed amazement with improvement in her health and the speed in being able to move on her own. Eunice and her entire family are grateful to the entire FOCOS staff and to all of those who donated during the Virtual Gala. Eunice is currently preparing to join her colleagues at school.

Emmanuel – 13 Years

Emmanuel is from a remote village in the Central Region of Ghana where people have little or no knowledge of spinal deformities, and those who suffer such conditions have little or no access to health care. He suffered from a fast-growing spinal condition and said that the pains he endured were some of the most dreadful moments in his life. In addition, the stigma he experienced affected him and his entire family. Emmanuel said that people mocked him, called him names, and even told his family that they should “get rid of him”.

In the quest for seeking medical care, Emmanuel’s parents took him to several hospitals and other consultants, but all efforts proved futile. His sponsors – Compassion International – came across FOCOS Hospital on social media and recommended that they make an appointment with a specialist, which happened in November 2017. Emmanuel went through a series of diagnostic tests and was diagnosed with TB Kyphosis, which is tuberculosis of the spine with an exaggerated, forward rounding of the upper back. Such a condition, if left untreated, could lead to paralysis. He was recommended for surgery and would need more than one in order to correct his condition.

Emmanuel had high hopes. However, his joy was short lived when his family received the bill, which tripled, because he needed to have three surgeries – one in 2017, another in 2020 and the last in June 2022. Emmanuel’s hope was restored, though. He was able to undergo life-changing surgery because of Compassion International Ghana, who sponsored all of his surgeries (which totaled over $30,000).

Emmanuel would like to express his gratitude to the FOCOS medical team and hospital staff for each of his successful procedures and transforming his life. He is also grateful for the physiotherapy sessions and quality of care he received, which contributed immensely to his recovery. Furthermore, Emmanuel is eternally thankful to Compassion International Ghana for their generous contribution and providing him with the opportunity to pursue his life dreams in good health.

HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS, A.J. JOHNSON INTERACTS WITH CHILDREN AT FOCOS ORTHOPEDIC HOSPITAL

The beginning of every year sets the tone of its run. Exactly five days into 2021, Adrienne-Joi Johnson, and business partner, Amadou are in Ghana to pay a visit to the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital, in a perfectly timed expedition to extend the New Year cheer among over 20 children currently receiving care at the Hospital.

Johnson, who is an Ambassador of the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, and her partner, arrived on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, and interacted with various pediatric patients at the Children’s Ward. Welcoming the team to the Hospital, Associate Medical Director of FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital, Dr. Gerhard Ofori-Amankwah, commended A.J. Johnson for her continuous support for FOCOS through her annual visits and awareness creation activities.

Commenting on the objective of her visit, A.J. Johnson emphasized that it was necessary for the mental health of pediatric patients to feel loved and know that people are thinking about them. She mentioned that COVID has presented an opportunity to better educate people about the difficulties faced by spine patients. She mentioned that due to the impact of COVID-19, most Americans would now have a different sensitivity to the plight of vulnerable children suffering from spine deformity in Ghana.

According to her, Americans are going to recognize that the idea people used to have about “Africa is so far away, spine problems don’t affect me” are changing because they are now presented with the fact that “there is something they have in common, pain, distress, depression and fear”.

A.J. Johnson and Amadou took time to interact with children at the Children’s Ward and in the classroom at the Hospital. She expressed excitement meeting all 20 children currently at the hospital, especially those who have recovered after surgery, since her last visit in December 2019.

Together, We Help The World Stand Tall!!

FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital Undertakes First Brain Tumor Surgery

In yet another display of supreme excellence in healthcare delivery within the Sub-Saharan Africa region, the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital in Accra-Ghana, established through the instrumentality of Nana Professor Boachie-Adjei and the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine has, on October 29, 2020, successfully conducted its first Brain Tumor Surgery.

The patient, a 54-year-old male, experienced severe headaches and weakness in the left part of his body, as well as memory and speech problems, leading to his eventual referral to the FOCOS Hospital. Medical investigations conducted resulted in him being diagnosed of a malignant brain tumor, that posed an overall risk of rapid growth capable of disrupting body function, especially mobility of the hands and legs. A resident Neurosurgeon at FOCOS Hospital who examined the patient, underscored the need for an urgent operation to confirm diagnosis and allow for further treatment including radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Without this, the patient could quickly deteriorate and lose his life.

The patient was scheduled for brain tumor surgery, with the aim of removing as much of the tumor as possible without damaging normal brain tissues. Doing this required a very high level of specialist skill and experience, advanced technology and a well-orchestrated team of Neurosurgeons and Anesthesiologists. A team of three (3) highly experienced Ghanaian Neurosurgeons at the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital (Dr. Kwadwo Poku Yankey, Dr. Harry Akoto and Dr. Teddy Totimeh) performed a successful procedure known as right temporal craniotomy on the patient, utilizing some of the latest and most advanced imaging and monitoring systems for the gross total excision of the brain tumor in under three (3) hours.

Without adequate anesthesia care, the entire surgery may not have been possible. Dr. Irene Wulff, the Medical Director of the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital, with 20 years of experience in Anesthesiology, led the process of administering anesthesia through high-level pain-blocking techniques, ensuring that the patient received the most appropriate type of anesthesia for the specific brain tumor. She was assisted by Dr. Liudmila Gross-Fernandez, a specialist Anesthetist at FOCOS Hospital.

Following the successful removal of the massive brain tumor, the patient has gone on to make a remarkable recovery, and living a normal life. The tremendous recovery milestone was largely due to the excellent post-surgical care the patient received at the well-quipped, state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit and clinical ward of the Hospital. Currently undergoing radiotherapy, nearly all of his pre-operation symptoms including persistent headaches, seizures and early morning vomiting have ceased. He has regained the ability to utilize his left hand and leg, and is now able to walk normally.

In the years to come, FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital and its complement of world class medical specialists, will continue the pursuit of cutting-edge brain tumor surgery, leveraging advanced technologies and quality metrics for improved patient outcomes and quality of life.

DR. ALI M. MAZIAD, MD, PHD, AN AMERICAN ORTHOPEDIC SPINE SURGEON, SHARES EXPERIENCES AT FOCOS HOSPITAL

Dr. Ali M. Maziad, MD, PhD, is an American orthopedic spine surgeon in private practice (Maziad Spine Institute) who also maintains an academic faculty appointment at Ain Shams University in his home country, Egypt. He has just landed in Ghana! With over 15 years’ experience, he has chosen to volunteer at FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital in Accra and offer assistance to the medical staff in treating patients with spinal deformities. The planned two months visit which began on October 4th, will end on December 7th, 2019.

Following his residency in Orthopedic surgery, Dr. Maziad successfully completed multiple, technically diverse spine surgery fellowships at prestigious academic institutions in USA with training ranging from various minimally invasive techniques in spine surgery to complex spinal deformities in adults and pediatrics. Among them, in 2013, he completed the fellowship of complex spinal deformities at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS, Cornell University) which is ranked as #1 in USA for orthopedics and spine surgery. During that fellowship, Dr. Maziad trained for a full year under Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, Founder and CEO of FOCOS (Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine) who was also the Chief of the Scoliosis service at HSS.

Dr. Maziad is not a stranger to the FOCOS family; he has received the Andrew Swanson Alumni Traveling Scholarship to participate in two of the FOCOS Spine mission trips to Ghana in March and May of 2013. During those trips, Dr. Maziad witnessed the early opening of FOCOS hospital in Accra, and alongside a team of dedicated volunteers, he performed surgeries on many patients with very complex and neglected spinal deformities who hailed to FOCOS from various African countries where skilled surgeons and advanced facilities are lacking.

Upon arrival to FOCOS hospital last week, Dr. Maziad expressed his excitement at the level of development and quality of facilities FOCOS has as he commends the CEO and Founder Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei for the excellent work done: “Having seen the hospital at its inception 7 years ago and today, I am particularly amazed at the fast pace at which FOCOS is growing and the level of care it brings to the West African region especially with the state-of-the-art facility it has, the highly trained and skilled staff and the high clinical standard adopted by FOCOS hospital which is quite impressive and matches
that found in specialized centers in USA.” Dr. Maziad is a member of several organisations including; SRS – Scoliosis Research Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), AO-Spine Foundation, American Academy of Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery (AAMISMS). He also participated in many advanced spine courses and meetings over the years.

Besides his clinical experience, Dr. Maziad has received a Masters and PhD degree in Orthopaedic surgery, he maintains a big interest in philanthropic work through charity hospitals and mission trips and wishes to further collaborate with FOCOS in that field. Commenting on the personality of Prof. Boachie-Adjei, Dr. Maziad said, “Prof. Boachie-Adjei is undoubtedly a world renowned orthopedic spine surgeon. His expertise in handling the most complex spinal deformity cases is unparalleled. He is a great mentor, a leader and a true role model that I thrive to follow. I consider myself very privileged to have been trained by Prof. Boachie in the past. I hope this new trip to FOCOS will be an opportunity for sharing ideas with him and adding more to my knowledge from his vast experience. I also hope it opens the door to more collaboration with FOCOS in the future to emulate its success story in my home country, Egypt as well as other parts of Africa where
advanced care for patients with complex spinal deformities is much needed.” he added. We would like to welcome Dr. Maziad back in Ghana and wish him a fruitful time at FOCOS Hospital.

A PRESIDENTIAL WELCOME AT FOCOS GALA NEW YORK CITY 2019

The Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS), a non-profit organization that provides access to comprehensive, affordable orthopedic care, hosted this year’s  2019 FOCOS New York City Fundraising Gala on Monday, September 23, 2019 at the renowned 583 Park Avenue event center in Manhattan.

This year’s esteemed guest of honor, the President of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who received the organization’s Humanitarian Award on behalf of the Republic of Ghana, for the government’s longstanding support to FOCOS.  H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo together with several other ministers and government officials graced the ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Emeritus Oheneba Boachie-Adjei the President and Founder of the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS), expressed his worry over the huge numbers of people who still need care. He said, “Access to good quality orthopedic care and the lack of affordable insurance programs have denied many patients of the needed care for their orthopedic conditions. As I speak, there are about 3,000 children and adult patients on our wait list who need urgent medical care. Cost of surgery at our hospital is between $10,000 and $20,000 compared with $100,000 and $200,000 of similar surgeries here in the United States. Even at these highly-subsidized rates, made possible by your cash and in-kind donations, majority of our patients can’t afford to pay. Unfortunately, we don’t have the funds to provide them with the needed treatment. It is startling to know that 56% of the cases we see are life threatening.

The former Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chief of the Scoliosis Service at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), narrated how he almost lost his life when he was seven years old. But for the magnanimous gesture of one Dr. Mensah of blessed memory, UK trained medical doctor who returned home who treated him free of charge, he would have lost his life. This has been his motivation to help cater for people in similar situation especially children. “It was his expertise, compassion and generosity that saved my life. This lesson has been my motivation to care for others.”

Adding to the plethora of commendations regarding the work of FOCOS, the New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, said,  “FOCOS’ leadership, staff and volunteers remain tirelessly committed to improving the health and wellbeing of underserved patients and families, and to advancing our state’s standing as a leader in health care service. I applaud the medical and non-medical professionals affiliated with FOCOS for donating their time, resources and talents to help others have the opportunity to stand tall.”

Appreciating the sponsors and donors who have stuck with the FOCOS mission and vision so far, Prof. Boachie-Adjei  acknowledged  among others : Wayne and Claire Heyland for supporting FOCOS programs in Ghana and Sierra Leone, Martin and Michele Cohen, the American-Jewish Joint Distribution Committee for funding patients from Ethiopia (over 1,000 surgeries, and counting); Stryker/K2M for supplying FOCOS with surgical implants, the Bloomberg Foundation, the Stavros Niarkos Foundation (SNF) and the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). He also mentioned the Government of Ghana, the Ministry of Health, and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation for their unwavering support. The list goes on.

He concluded by appealing to all and sundry to especially the public and private sector organizations of Ghana, the USA and around the globe gathered to partner with FOCOS for the sustainability of the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital. This he says will help Patient sponsorship, establishment of an institute to build capacity for research, education and outreach and capital improvements and facility maintenance.

FOCOS mission is to provide highest quality and affordable orthopedic care to those who would not otherwise have access to such treatment. For more information about FOCOS hospital and how to make a donation please go to www.focoshospital.org.
